This winter Renaissance Siena at National Gallery allows visitors to see the skill, craftsmanship and beauty of the works created in the last century of the Sienese Republic. With around one hundred works on display, many of which have come to Britain for the very first time, this is a stunning exhibition that will appeal to art lovers and history fans alike.
Paintings, sculptures, drawings, manuscripts and ceramics are all included in the Renaissance Sinena exhibition, with loans from the galleries in Europe and America as well as items from the National Gallery's own collection. The show covers the period from 1460 to 1530, and demonstrates the artistic achievement of the country during the volatile period of political instability.
Although Medieval art from Siena is well known, the work on show in the exhibition of Renaissance Siena at National Gallery brings to light much lesser known pieces and artists. Celebrating the painters and sculptors that have been consistently under appreciated, Renaissance Siena: Art for a City hopes to redress that balance and make the names of Francesco di Giorgio and Domenico Beccafumi as popular within Britain as the Florentine Renaissance painters.
Peculiar to Siena, the artworks on show at the National Gallery demonstrate the sense of national identity and pride created in the paintings and sculptures. The exhibition of Renaissance Siena at National Gallery begins with images of the city itself, before moving on to its saints. Other pictures and sculptures show that the city and its style was very important to the artists and throughout the show, visitors are able to form a visual concept of Siena and its people.
Notable works included in the show are an altarpiece from the Siena ruled town of Asciano, which is reunited with the other surviving parts for the first time, and a collection of heroes and heronies originally painted for a marriage celebration by all the leading painters of the time. Vivid and vibrant the gold and extraordinary colours used in the works will dazzle the viewer and help conjure images of the Renaissance city itself.
