Renoir at the Theatre

Taking the inspiration from the famous La Loge painting created by Pierre Auguste Renoir in 1874, Renoir at the Theatre is an exhibition that looks at the world of Impressionism in the 1870s. Focusing on their depiction of fashionable society in Paris, Renoir at the Theatre is a delightful exploration of 19th century art.

The exhibition unites La Loge, Renoir's depiction of an elegant couple in a theatre box, with several other key pieces from the time that epitomise the Impressionists' fascination with the middle and upper classes and their social pursuits. Many of the other artists included in Renoir at the Theatre choose similar subjects and treatments for their work, creating a broad spectrum of paintings that tell the story of fashionable life in 1870's Paris.

Mary Cassatt and Edgar Degas are both featured in the exhibition at Somerset House alongside Renoir, and several of their works also portray the excitement of the theatre from the spectators point of view. Focusing specifically on the early days of Impressionism, the paintings are fresh, full of life, and convey with amazing accuracy the thrill of society and the changing nature of the fashionable Parisian society at the time.

Showing alongside Renoir at the Theatre is a collection of emotive French drawings also from the 19th century, which includes work from Manet, Renoir and Pissarro.
