20 inch pizzas in New York style surroundings - super size me baby! Mulberry Street hails from the Little Italy area in Manhattan and the owners have brought a slice of its style to W2.The VenueLarge floor to ceiling windows adorn the front of this upmarket pizza joint and it’s just as well as it faces one of the most vibrant, people watching streets in London - Westbourne Grove. You can’t miss it, as it has a traffic light beckoning you in, and a display model of what’s on offer once you step inside: what could easily be described as the Vanessa Feltz of pizzas!
The restaurant's neighbours include art galleries, a trendy pool bar and oh so fashionable organic stores. But all you really need to know is that what Ping Pong is to dim sum, Mulberry Street is to pizza. The walls are adorned with picture perfect scenes of Broadway, so realistic you'll feel as though you could step inside one of them and hail a yellow cab. Meanwhile, the bar area is a haven for solo punters munching their way through their 20 inches in peace alongside Happy Days style parties in the booths. Either way, the open plan kitchen ensures that pizza making becomes a spectator sport here.
The AtmosphereIt can get really busy, so book ahead. You can always have a drink at the bar whilst you wait for your booth and the hustle and bustle of the stylish Westbourne Grove crowd jostling to get a booth whilst pretending not to care is entertainment in itself.
The seats are cleverly built to face one another within the booth, and the fact that the pizzas are large enough to share makes it perfect for family and friend gatherings of six or less. The emphasis at Mulberry Street is on fun rather than refinement - a colossal plasma screen behind the chef blasts out live concerts such as The Police and U2.
The FoodThe reason behind the New York theme is evident once you clap your eyes on the 20 inches of cheese, dough and toppings. The American style, super size servings are perfect for family sized occasions or a hangover brunch with mates, they even offer the ever popular half-half option.
Complimentary olives marinated in garlic are a great start to your meal and arrive as soon as you are seated. As for the pizza, a tad on the bland side it's not the tastiest pizza ever invented but if you're all about quantity rather than quality then this is the place for you. Catering to the size 0 locals, pizzas such as Skinny Bitch and Beluga King adorn the menu. Hero sandwiches, pasta and salads add a smidgen of variety but if you're feeling particularly game, then finish off your mammoth pizza, with more pizza. Chocolate pizza sits on the menu alongside Mom’s (really?) delicious homemade cakes as well as that Yankee favourite, hot fudge sundae.
The DrinkEverything under the sun for you to choose from here, from Pinot Grigio to Laurent Perrier champagne, Brooklyn lager to Nastro Azzuro, or maybe you might want to opt for wino strength hard liquor such as the Grey Goose Vodka?
The Last WordYankee doodle dandee! Go to Mulberry Street for the people watching and bonding associated with sharing a pizza of this magnitude! Request extra spices to avoid blandness and perhaps a window seat to watch the world go by. Best of all, prices are so cheap you may as well be paying in American dollars!
