An exhibition by Richard Hamilton at Serpentine Gallery takes place in spring 2010 as the gallery kicks off its 40th anniversary year. Celebrating the work of one of the world's most respected living artists, the exhibition Modern Moral Matters looks at the ways in which the media represents modern society.
Richard Hamilton
Serpentine Gallery presents a retrospective of Richard Hamiltons work from the 1950s to the present day, with work including paintings, printmaking, installations and design. Sure to be a hit with fans of his art, the exhibition also makes for a great introduction to the artist and his ouevre.
Global politics
Much of the work on show in the exhibition by Richard Hamilton at Serpentine Gallery focuses on his obsession with global politics and the manipulation of the media. Themes such as riots, terrorist acts and war are all included in the artworks, with a focus on how they are fed to the masses through the television, the papers and the internet. His portraits specifically focus on the way in which the public are seen to be media hungry, and constantly clamouring for images, which are then transformed into a more permanent form.
Changing times and technology
Using the ever changing world of technology as his inspiration, visitors to the show are able to chart the development of the media and its technological advances through the artwork. By manipulating images, spaces and referencing different styles and genres, the artist constantly questions the world around us. In the work on show by Richard Hamilton at Serpentine Gallery you can see how he has reinvented the nature of history painting to his own agenda.
Exhibition highlights
Fans of his work will be keen to see this major retrospective, and gain insight into his working mind by following the chronology of the art. Highlights from Richard Hamilton at Serpentine Gallery include Swingeing London 67, presented as a collection of newspaper clippings based on Mick Jagger's arrest for drug taking, and Kent State, which is part of his Protest Pictures series, inspired by the killing of four students at Kent University in 1970.
Modern Moral Matters, the exhibition by Richard Hamilton at Serpentine Gallery takes place from 10am - 6pm, Wednesday 3rd March - Sunday 25th April 2010. Entrance is free.
