Whether you're a beginner, an Olympic hopeful or just a spectator, fans of volleyball should head to the Richmond Volleyball International Festival. This three-day camping festival sees sportsmen and women of all abilities compete in a fun and friendly environment. There are also onsite activities for spectators and evening entertainment to help you wind down after a hard day at the net.
Players and Non Players
You have to have a team to register, but that doesn't mean the Richmond Volleyball International Festival is restricted to volleyball players only. If you've never played there are come and try sessions with a qualified coach, plus a host of onsite entertainment. If, however, you've mastered the art of thumping the ball over the net, the format for matches is six aside teams playing in divisions made up of eight to 10 teams. You'll play at least four matches over the two days, and if you and your team make it through to the finals, you'll play two to three matches.
League Levels
The divisions are split into men, women, mixed and juniors. These are further divisions according to what level you're at, but this is something you'll have to judge as there's no seeding system in place. The Richmond Volleyball International Festival is open to national league players right down to beginners and casual players. Saturday and Sunday are the preliminary rounds and the finals, semi-finals and play-offs take place on Bank Holiday Monday. Places are allocated on a first come, first served basis so you'll have to be quick.
Nightly Entertainment
There's organised camping throughout the weekend with plenty of showers for when you need to cool off after the game. There's also onsite parking and, as it's at the Imber Court Sports Club, there are three large clubhouse bars to quench your thirst at, plus a beer wagon. Every night DJ Ian will be playing music from the 60s through to present chart hits and there'll be entertainment from a Carribean band. To ensure you don't have any sore muscles there's a sports massage available, and to replenish your reserves there's plenty of onsite catering. You can have a full breakfast, plus lunch at the Metropol Cafe or enjoy a hog roast from the open spit.
Onsite Activities
If you're planning to take along the kids, there's a children's zone and junior tournament, as well as access to the club's swimming pools. Obviously, it's the taking part that counts, but there are prizes, and winners in each division will recieve a brand new Mikasa MVA match abll and a £30 voucher for the 2010 Richmond Volleyball International Festival. When you register you'll also be entered into a raffle draw for a Mikasa MVA match ball. There are also medals for the overall winners.
The Richmond Volleyball International Festival takes place at the Imber Courts Sports Club from 29th - 31st August 2009. Tickets cost £75 a team for non-campers, or £100 if you camp. Non-players cost £10 for evening entertainment and camping. For more information click on the link below.
