An unusal art installation entitled River Sounding at Somerset House takes place during the spring inviting visitors to lose themselves in the sound of the Thames. Created by sound artist Bill Fontana, this is your chance to explore the sounds of the city not normally heard on a daily basis.

River Sounding at Somerset House
Commissioned by Somerset House and Sound and Music, the sound installation River Sounding captures the essence of the Thames over a hundred mile stretch. Taking in all the atmospheric noises from along the Thames between Richmond and Southend, this artwork works like an imaginary acoustic map, taking you on a tidal journey towards the coast.

Subterranean spaces
To add to the unusual experience of the sound installation, visitors following the trail of River Sounding at Somerset House will gain access to the subtereanean spaces beneath the historic venue that are normally closed off to the public. Leading you on a nautical journey underneath the great facade, you will travel from within the building out onto the Great Arch on the Embankment, which highlights the buildings historical link with the great river.

Bill Fontana
The artist behind the soundscape installation is renowned for working with various sounds around the world, including Lyon, Venice and Berlin. He is also no stranger to the noises of London as before creating the River Sounding at Somerset House, he captured the sounds of the Big Ben clock tower and the Millennium Bridge outside the Tate Modern.

Thames talks
A series of talks and film screenings are taking place throughout the River Sounding installation to accompany the artwork. Featuring artists, curators and writers the talks will cover a variety of topics related either to the Thames or the sound artwork installed at Somerset House. Visitors can explore the work of other artists who have taken their inspiration from the great river, and hear poems and songs inspired by the River Soundings themselves.

Film screenings
Alongside the talks programme two special film screening nights are taking place in the Screening Room at Somerset House. William Raban presents two films in one night that take a look at the Thames with a poetical documentary style eye. The second film screening evening focuses on found objects gathered from the banks of the Thames and constructed into a live cinematic performance in front of the audience.
