Six robotic arms at Trafalgar Square will no doubt be one of the highlights of the London Design Festival this year as the giant mechanical works take over the most famous square in town. Whether you are a fan of space age technology or simply want to marvel at the monstrous octopus like structure, the robotic arms at Trafalgar Square are truly a sight to be seen.

Robotic arms at Trafalgar Square
Seen as the centrepiece of the annual festival for 2010, the robotic arms installation will take pride of place in Trafalgar Square for the duration of the festival with visitors encouraged to get interactive with the arms and use them to create their own design-led artworks.

Industrial technology
Entitled Outrace, the six tentacle robotic arms at Trafalgar Square have been developed by German car designers Clemens Weisshaar and Reed Kram in response to a commission by car manufacturer Audi. Taking the form of six enormous industrial mechanical arms, the robotic arms have been designed using custom-made software, and specially created for the London Design Festival to encourage the public to get hands on with its designs.

Get creative
Sure to gather plenty of attention from the busy location, the robotic arms at Trafalgar Square will be open to the public to create their own artwork of inscribe messages with lasers in the sky. As the arms are manipulated they will produce light traces from all six of the synchronised mechanical tentacles, resulting in light paintings in the air around them. These paintings will then be recorded and published online for their creators and everyone else to see.

London Design Festival
Taking place every autumn, the London Design Festival is an nine day celebration of everything design related. From fashion, jewellery and textiles to furniture, sculpture and large scale structures, the festival is crammed with the biggest and best design related events. Taking over various different venues around London, you can take part in or witness some intruiging, exciting and unusual design based events at the Southbank Centre, the Victoria and Albert Museum and of course the Design Museum, to name just a few.

The robotic arms at Trafalgar Square are on show as part of the London Design Festival 2010 which takes place from Saturday 18th September - Sunday 26th September 2010. For more information on the festival, click on the link below.
