The Rock Against Racism London gig taking place at Victoria Park in April celebrates 30 years since the original anti Nazi carnival kicked off in exactly the same place. With a whole host of exciting bands and appearances from some old faces from the 1978 gig, Rock Against Racism is sure to be a fantastic day of live music, supporting anti fascism.
Victoria Park played host to the massive Rock Against Racism carnival of 1978 and 2008 sees an even bigger and better event return to the same location. With three stages, big names, live music, DJ sessions and a carnival style march to start the show off, the event looks set to make the history books once more.
Bands like The Clash, Tom Robinson Band, Steel Pulse and X Ray Spex played at the original Rock Against Racism London gig back in the seventies to make a stance against fascism and to support the Anti Nazi League. This year some of the hottest contemporary artists like Hard Fi and Fionn Regan will be putting their names to the Love Music Hate Racism gig in Victoria Park in an attempt to encourage thousands to vote against racism in the Greater London Assemnly and local council elections due in May.
Joining the bright young things of the music industry today will be the likes of Tom Robinson, The Specials' Jerry Dammers, Roll Deep and the filmmaker and Clash collaborator Don Letts. Music will come from some of the most exciting hip hop, indie, grime, bhangra, rock, RnB, funky house and jungle acts around. More contemporary musical artists are still yet to be announced, so check back soon to see if your favourite bands are also joining in the Rock Against Racism fight.
The Rock Against Racism anniversary gig isn't just about great music, although there will certainly be plenty of that. Gig goers can also hear speakers, attend debates and get more information on fighting racism and fascism wherever they live. And with transport being organised across the UK for as many people as possible to be able to attend Rock Against Racism, London had better get set for a full on party on the day.
Rock Against Racism London anniversary gig takes place on 27th April 2008. For more information on event times and artists, check back soon. Rock Against Racism is free at attend, but donations are welcomed.
