The Room for London installation is set to be one of the hottest and most popular hotel spots in the city throughout 2012. Created as part of the London 2012 Festival and the Southbank Centre's Festival of the World, A Room for London is a unique art installation that doubles up as a vista-spectacular hotel room, perched on top of the Queen Elizabeth Hall.
Room for London installation
Available to book for one night only at a time, and with the first half of the year sold out in minutes, the unusual hotel room has been created as a collaboration between architect David Kohn and artist Fiona Banner. Designed as a boat that sits on top of one of the Southbank Centre's key music halls, the bedroom installation invites visitors to spend a quiet night being inspired by the London landscape and it's amazing views from way above the Thames.
Up on the roof
Given that most hotels deck out their penthouse in the most luxurious style, it should come as no surprise that the Room for London installation is designed with the same level of care and attention. Intended as a place of refuge and reflection, the boat room looks out on some of the most iconic of London landmarks, and inside offers no less an appealing view, with beautifully crafted timber, and plenty of nooks and crannies for investigation.
Collaborative art
Even though the setting is perfect and the boat nice and cosy, you musn't be lulled into thinking that this one night stay is simply about relaxing and having a good time. All visitors to the Room for London installation will have to raise the flag on the boat to signal the start of their residence, and fill out the logbook before they leave. Designed to encourage residents to talk about what they felt about their stay from an emotional point of view as well as a practical one, this is set to be London's biggest collaborative art installation of the year.
Room for London events
Alongside the 365 overnight guests that will call the boat installation home for 24 hours, several key events will take place in the Room for London installation over the course of the year, devised by Artangel. A London Address will see several writers reflect on the city, Sounds from a Room hosts a sequence of live webcast performances by musicians, and Ideas for London is a competition whereby individuals can win a night in the boat room, where they will have the chance to discuss their ideas with a number of influential guests.
The Room for London installation takes place from Sunday 1st January - Monday 31st December 2011 at Queen Elizabeth Hall.
