Royal Faberge exhibition
London gets a sneaky peak at the Queen's home every year as the summer opening of Buckingham Palace allows the hoi polloi in behind the scenes of pomp and ceremony. For 2011, the special summer exhibition focuses on the work of Peter Carl Faberge, Russian jeweller and goldsmith, whose unmatched reputation for creating exquisitely detailed pieces was inextricably linked with the Imperial Romanov family.
Royal approval
Following in the footsteps of his father, Faberge took over the family business in 1872 and began a career that would see his designs in some of the most influential houses in Europe. Appointed official Supplier to the Imperial Court of Russia in 1885, the patronage of the Romanovs was key to his success and to his pieces becoming renowned across the royal families of Holland and Britain as well. In the Royal Faberge exhibition London event at Buckingham Palace, visitors can see a huge selection of Easter Eggs, boxes, carvings and ornaments that has been created by successive generations of the British Royal Family.
Decorative jewels
Creating works in enamel, using multicoloured gold decoration and carved semi precious stones, the pieces created by Faberge were inspired by a range of sources including antinquity, Oriental art, Louis XV art, Art Nouveau and old Russia. Bringing together these varying styles gave the jewellery and decorative works their own unique aspect, which was much favoured by the British royals at the end of the 19th century and beyond. On show in the Royal Faberge exhibition are pieces onces owned by Edward VII, George V and his wife Queen Mary, and the Queen Mother, as well as ones owned by the current royal family.
Exhibition highlights
The first piece of Faberge design to be owned by the British royal family, was a notebook and case, given to Queen Victoria by her neice Tsarina Alexandra on the occassion of her Diamond Jubilee. This along with cigarette cases and humorous objects owned by King George V and Queen Mary, and a crystal inkwell given to the the current monarch on her marriage to Prince Phillip, are all on show at the Royal Faberge exhibition, making this one of the most impressive sumemr exhibitions in London.
The Royal Faberge exhibition London event takes place from Saturday 23rd July - Monday 3rd October 2011. Standard adult tickets cost £17.00: children aged 5 - 17 cost £10.00, and the those under 5 go free. For more information and to book advance tickets for the opening, click on the link below.
