Rude Britannia at Tate Britain invites you to share a joke with the artists and enjoy an exhibition centred around British comic art. With the likes of Harry Hill, William Hograth and Viz Magazine all in the mix, this is set to be one very funny exhibition.

Rude Britannia at Tate Britain
Celebrating the great tradition of comic art in Britain through painting, photos, film, sculpture and drawing, this exhibition looks at the history of art making us laugh from the 1600s onwards. Presented and curated by some of the country's best known comedy writers and comic artists, this is your chance to look back through the annals of art history, and see if it really all one big joke.

Funny ha ha
Taking visual satire from the likes of Hogarth as a starting point, Rude Britannia at Tate Britain aims to look far beyond the engravings and highlights installations, performances and 3D work, all as some of the best of British comic art from the past 400 years. Reflecting how technological advancements have changed the face of comedy in the artworld, visitors to the exhibition will also experience works performed on radio, in film and other new media.

Only when I laugh
The saucy seaside postcard will feature as a theme amongst the artworks in show in the exhibition, along with various other traditional comical art themes. Bawdy illustrations from the likes of Aubrey Beardsley and Sarah Lucas are included, along with absurdist drawings from Edward Lear and sculpture from David Shrigley. Visitors to Rude Britannia at Tate Britain can also examine the ways in which politics, society and morality have been dealt with in comic ways.

TV's Harry Hill
A key part of the exhibition is that it has been curated and presented through several popular comedy writers and artists from contemporary society. Alongside cartoonists Steve Bell, Gerald Scarfe and the team from Viz, Harry Hill of TV Burp fame has curated a room at the show, giving you the chance to see what makes the blady big-collared comedian laugh.

Rude Britannia at Tate Britain, an exhibition of British comic art, takes place from 10am - 5.5pm, Wednesday 9th June - Sunday 5th September 2010. Tickets are £10.00 or £8.50 for concessions.
