The Sargent and the Sea exhibition takes place over the summer at the Royal Academy, and looks at the artistic relationship the artist developed with the sea and the people who lived there.

Sargent and the Sea exhibition
Best known for his glamorous paintings of important society figures in the 19th century, the Sargent and the Sea exhibition at Royal Academy sets out to challenge the view and explore his lesser known paintings of the sea. Presenting more than 80 paintings, the show will look at his work in a different light by shining light on his travels and his friendships with the people he met.

Coastal scenes
As Sargent spent many of his summers travelling around the French coast, he began to make more observational paintings based on the seascapes that were to become familiar to him. Making journeys from Paris to Brittany and from Normandy to Capri, he took inspiration for a series of paintings now on show in the Sargent and the Sea exhibition.

En plein air
Many artists were taken with the notion of painting outdoors around this time and capturing the elements as they felt them. Much of Sargent's work produced druing the 1870s features this style of working, with Beach at Capri, Atlantic Storm and Sailboat all key pieces that feature in the Sargent and the Sea exhibition. Revealing a much less formal style that is far from his reputation as a stuffy society portrait painter, this is a chance for art fans to see a more naturalistic side to the artist.

Watercolours and drawings
As Sargent travelled around France and back to America, he witnessed many different seascapes and coastal scenes that he then represented in paint. Taking watercolours and sketches outside, he could capture the whole scene quickly and make use of the abudance of natural light to help him create his work. Fans of coastal art and beach scenes are sure to be fascinated by the work on show in Sargent and the Sea exhibition, as it offers such a different perspective on this well known 19th century artist.

The Sargent and the Sea exhibition takes place from 10am - 6pm, Saturday 10th July - Sunday 26th September 2010 at Royal Academy of Arts.

Tickets are £12.00, £8.00 - £10.00 concession, £4.00 for 12 - 18 year olds, £3.00 for 8 - 11 year olds and under 7s go free.
