The ViewLondon Review

Review byChris Jackson-Jones22/01/2008
A stage fit for any live act and a dancefloor begging to be filled, Scala is perfect for every night their promoters present.

The Venue
The stage in the main room is spot on, spacious yet intimate. Punters can get up close and personal without ridiculous security measures. Raised platforms and a balcony mean a good view is guaranteed and whilst the main room decor leaves a lot to be desired, the quality of the acts will quickly divert your attention.

A bright and roomy entrance offers a brief respite or the chance to refill at the bar, but if you are attending one of the many club nights, it won't be long before you want to get back to the floor. With the second room equally well sized, there is always a choice of music on offer, although due to its maze-like layout, unless close to capacity, Scala can often feel less busy than some of its London rivals.

The Atmosphere
The clientele produce an atmosphere most venues would die for. From pop princesses to geek chic, clubbers to indie kids, pick the right night and you can be guaranteed of a top one. The door staff are strict but once the night kicks off you won't want to leave.

The Music
Completely dependent on the night that you pick with pop and indie seeming to rule to roost, however, the live gigs really are the jewel in the crown. A great sound system and skilled engineers mean performers can often be seen at their best on the Scala stage. Top acts including Scissor Sisters, Chemical Brothers and Jamiroquai have all taken their turn to entertain at the Kings Cross venue.

The Drink
Dinks aren't cheap, but then this is Central London. The selection isn't fantastic but you'll find all the usual favourites even if they do come served in plastic cups. However, service is quick and the bar staff are friendly, which is more than can be said for some venues.

The Last Word
Right up there with the best, catch Scala on a busy club night or watching your favourite band and rest assured, you'll definitely want to visit again. All in all, a top London venue, especially for live music.
