Sci Fi London Film Festival

Sunday 28th April - Monday 6th May 2013

Stratford East Picturehouse

If your weekend plans involve debating which Star Trek series is the coolest or polishing your lightsaber collection, you’ve probably already marked the Sci Fi London Film Festival down on your calendar. And if you haven’t, take note – London’s annual film fest dedicated to the best in science fiction films is back again, and it’s going to be better than ever, starting with the epic sci-fi costume parade.

Sci Fi London Parade

Why you should go to Sci Fi London
To brush up on your ever increasing knowledge of the sci fi film world, of course! Hop in your Millennium Falcon and make your way to the Stratford Picturehouse cinema for the Sci Fi London Film Festival. Stock up on popcorn and prepare to be dazzled by a series of premieres and previews of brand new films and remade classics that are sure to make sci fi history - but whatever you do, remember to bring along your towel.

Don’t miss
Check out some brand new sci fi premieres and special screenings at the film festival that are bound to give you kudos amongst other sci fi fans. The 2013 festival features UK premieres, shorts, anime classics, as well as guest speakers overseeing lectures and debates. Don’t miss the chance to be among the first in the UK to see some of the best science fiction and fantasy films for the coming year. 2013 sees the 12th anniversary of the festival, so expect even more in the way of special events, such as the free BFI Film Production Worksop, and the 50th birthday celebrations for the Doctor Who franchise taking place at the BFI Southbank.

48 hour film challenge
At the Sci Fi London Film Festival you’ll also get the chance to see if you can make your own films. This year teams can knock up a brilliant sci fi flick in just 48 hours, where they can spend an entire weekend writing, editing and shooting their sci-fi debut. This year also sees Guillermo del Toro and Benedict Cumberpatch on the judging panel to select the winners. The prizes for this year's winners include a feature film development deal with Vertigo films, camera equipment from Canon and a green screen package from Camberwell Studios. Successful entrant will also premiere on Warwick Davies' The Multiverse Film channel as well as at the festival.

Chill out
Stay up late with fellow sci fi fans at the Sci Fi London Film Festival all nighter series. There's the usual selection of manga, horror and fantasy films, as well as a few surprises thrown into the mix. Alongside the Anime and MST3K all nighters, featuring the best in Japanese animation and hilarious comdey sci fi spoofs, there is also The Defiance all nighter. Tremors and District 9 will no doubt be two of the highlights at the Defiance event, which focuses on films that see humans triumph over aliens.

The final curtain
Alongside a glut of all these special events, there’s also plenty of screenings of classic science fiction feature films, as well as a variety of shorts and even more events. The opening night film is Byzantium, a British-Irish fantasy thriller about a mother/daughter vampire duo. Several world premieres and UK premieres take place at this year's festival with Vessel, an anime steampunk version of a classic, War of the Worlds: Goliath 3D, a complicated sci fi relationship drama, Mars et Avril and the closing film, Dark by Noon, a film set in an an alternative reality in 1993, where a time traveler sees an explosion in the future and must uncover the cause before its too late.

The Sci Fi London Film Festival runs from Sunday 28th April - Monday 6th May 2013 at Stratford Picturehouse, BFI Southbank and other venues.
