An exhibition looking at Scotts last expedition at Natural History Museum invites visitors to take a closer look at the scientific achievements accomplished by Captain Scott and his Polar Party.
Scotts last expedition
The Natural History Museum is hosting a major exhibition on the expedition team and their attempts to gather information and make as many discoveries about the South Pole and it's Antarctic environs as possible. Steering away from the usual studies of tragedy and the familiar tales told about the Terra Nova crew, the Last Expedition exhibition attempts to look at different perspectives and explain what it was really like to be working in the extreme conditions whilst attempting to gather specimens and data.
Original artefacts
Visitors to the exhibition on Scotts Last Expedition at Natural History Museum can get up close with some of the original artefacts used on the trip, giving them a fantastic insight in the way in which every day life was lived on the Antarctic trip. These alongside photos and scientific specimens collected on the journey are bound to be some of the most fascinating exhibits on display, and many of them have never actually been seen by the public before.
Terra Nova hut
One of the highlights of the Natural History Museum show is certain to be the recreation of the Terra Nova hut which was used by Scotts team on their expedition as the base for their operations. Occupied by 25 men and nearly 20 Siberian ponies, the hut was insulated with seaweed, and housed all their food, supplies and scientific equipment for the three year expedition. Despite being reused by Shackleton on his 1915 trip, the hut was shut up and abandoned in 1917, and still remains in the same location today, with much of its contents preserved by the sub-freezing temperatures.
Lost photos
Some of the photos included in the exhibition come from the camera of Captain Scott himself, capturing images such as the chief of the scientific staff sketching the mountain ranges and tributary glaciers of the Beardmore Glacier, and the Terra Nova team trekking with their pack ponies across the snow. Featured in a book released to coincide with Scotts Last Expedition at Natural History Museum, these photos were forgetten about before the end of the expedition and most of them have never been seen in public ever before. Trained by the official expedition photographer Herbert Ponting who had his own dark room in the Terra Nova hut, these photos are unique in that they portray Scott's own perspective on his surroundings in the dramatic panaroma of the Antarctic.
