The exhibition Sense of Place at Museum of Childhood takes place as part of a cultural exchange between artists in England and India.

Sense of Place at Museum of Childhood
Two British artists spent tow months in Bangladesh and Ahmedabad, while two Indian artists and an Indian designer came the Harley Gallery in Nottingham and to the Musuem of Childhood. The resulting work from all involved forms the basis of the Sense of Place exhibition and marks a fascinating blend of cultural and artistic styles from both countries.

Cultural inspiration
Inspired by the different environments they found themselves in, the various artists spent time working and interacting with local people to provide new stimulae for their artwork. The British artists worked alongside Indian craftspeople and brought home many traditional Indian materials; the South Asian artists spent much of their time in the Museum in advance of the exhibition, and looked at the peep shows, toy theatres, concertina books, dolls and nursery clothing to influence their work in Sense of Place.

Museum of Childhood meets Bangladesh
Combining in a most unique exhibition, Sense of Place at Museum of Childhood presents a colourful and vivid exploration of the two very different cultural influences, taken from an outsiders perspective. Featuring enamel painting, fashion and textile designs, metalwork, paper constructions and folk art painting, the show invites you to explore the different experiences the artists had in both India and England through their art and their reactions to their travels.

Sense of Place at Museum of Childhood takes place from 10am - 5.45pm from Saturday 27th November 2010 - Sunday 12th June 2011. Entrance is free.
