Specially commissioned for the London Literature Festival, Sexing the Cherry at Southbank Centre sees the novel by Jeanette Winterson brought to life by the cast of Metta Theatre. Using spoken word, animation, puppetry and music, the production spins a magical narrative that transcends conventional ideas about time and space.

Magical tale
Central to the new play of Sexing the Cherry at Southbank Centre is the relationship between the orphaned Jordan and the grotesque but awe inspiring Dog Woman, a being so large that her skirt is as big as a ship's sail. Together, the pair leave the banks of the Thames in the 17th century and travel into the future and around the world to collect pineapples and other exotic fruits.

The world premiere of Sexing the Cherry at Southbank Centre is one of the highlights of the 2011 London Literature Festival, which also includes appearances from Philip Pullman, Iain Sinclair, Alexander McCall Smith and Michael Morpurgo. The performances of Sexing the Cherry at Southbank Centre take place in the Purcell Room from Friday 1st July - Saturday 2nd July 2011. The shows take place from 7.45pm on Friday and 2pm and 7.45pm on Saturday.
