Shakespeare exhibition at British Museum
Part of not only the World Shakespeare Festival but also the London 2012 Festival which celebrates the cultural side of London during the Olympics, the exhibition at British Museum is entitled Shakespeare's Theatre of the World. Provding a unique insight into both the playwright and his adoptive city, the British Museum invites you to step back in time to 1612 and experience life as Shakespeare and his contemporaries would have known it.
Shakespeare's London
In London in 1612, the tragedy Henry VIII would have been playing at the Globe, just before it burnt down in 1613, and Shakespeare was just about to put down his quill pen and parchment and finally cease writing. At the height of his popularity, his plays, verse and sonnets had made him enormously famous amongst the theatre loving public, his contemporary fellow writers and at both the courts of Elizabeth I and James I. Highlighting London as an emerging global city, with influence in both trade, politics and the arts, the Shakespeare exhibition at British Museum also explores the pivotal role of the playhouse as a means of shedding light on the world outside.
London 2012 festival
From international versions of Shakespeare plays to classic interpretations starring famous faces, the World Shakespeare Festival in London is certain to be a huge event. Giving you the chance to experience more of his works, see how Shakespeare is celebrated around the world, and perhaps learn the Japanese for "To be or not to be," the London based festival is crammed with exciting, interactive and celebratory events all designed to showcase the talent of one man and his quill pen.
World Shakespeare Festival
Celebrating Shakespeare and exploring all his works, the World Shakespeare Festival takes place across London, the UK and beyond. As well as examining his role in creating the a vast amount of literary and theatrical works, the festival also takes a look at the man himself and his personal influences. A major part of the Shakespeare exhibition at British Museum looks the importance of Shakespeare in shaping national identity since the 16th century, and attempts to bring to contemporary London a sense of the past, through objects, quotes and live performances.
