An exhibition entitled Shaped by War at Imperial War Museum London celebrates the life and career of one of the most famous war photographers of the 20th and 21st century. Don McCullin has loaned more than 250 different photos, objects, contact sheets, magazines and memorabilia to the museum to create a unique and personal exploration of his work in a very dangerous field.
Shaped by War at Imperial War Museum
Looking back over the past 50 years, visitors to the Shaped by War exhibition will be able to see just how significant the work of Don McCullin has been in shaping not only his own, but also the public's, experience of war. Capturing the frontline conflicts and their consequences from a variety of different wars, the lives of soldiers and civilians are told through his stunning black and white photos.
A personal history
Telling the story of his life as a frontline photographer, Shaped by War at Imperial War Museum brings together his work from various different conflicts around the world including confrontation between East and West Berlin, Vitenam and Cambodia, conflicts in the Middle East and Biafra and Bangladesh. Visitors to the exhibition are also able to see more recent examples of his work from the likes of the Gulr War and the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
Significant portraits
Alongside the pictures of soldiers in battle and civilians caught up in the gunfire, several other key photos are included in the exhibition by Don McCullin, having rarely been seen in public. Two portraits of Lance Corporal Johnson Beharry are on show in Shaped by War at Imperial War Museum, which commemorate his bravery in Iraq in 2004, which saw him given the Victoria Cross, which he subsequently had tattooed on his back. This immensely personal piece of art was then photographed by McCullin and is the first ever digital photograph to ever go on public display.
Photos and objects tell a story
Although McCullin's photographs are at the heart of the Imperial War Museum exhibition, visitors to the show are also able to see a selection of personal objects and memorabilia collected by the artist over the years. Alongside the black and white pictures, you can see the US Army helmet he wore in Vietnam and the Nikon F camera which stopped a bullet in Cambodia in 1970.
