Head to the screening of a classic film from the world of silent cinema at Spitalfields Market as part of the exciting programme of events during the East End Film Festival.

Early Romanian cinema
A free film screening bound to appeal to movie buffs, the 2011 silent cinema at Spitalfields Market event follows in the footsteps of the hugely popular screening of Hitchcock's The Lodger in the public space last year. This year, the screening is of the early Romanian film, Manasse.

Manasse
A 1925 feature from Jean Mihail, considered to be one of Romania's most important early directors, the 1925 silent film Minasse wrestles with many of the themes and concerns at the forefront of Romanian society in the early 20th century. The silent cinema at Spitalfields Market screening follows the love story of a Romanian man and a Jewish woman and the religious intolerance they encounter in their small town.

Live music
Accompanying the silent cinema at Spitalfields Market screening will be live music from Minima, who will be adding to the suspense and drama on screen. With a daring reinterpretation of the normal conventions of silent film soundtracks, the music from Minima should help to draw you even further into the lost world of 1920s Eastern Europe.

The screening of Manasse at the silent cinema at Spitalfields Market event starts 8pm, Saturday 30th April 2011. Admission is free.
