A hugely popular monthly event that regularly sees queues outside the former Holborn home of the famous architect, the late night opening of Sir John Soanes Museum by candlelight takes place on the first Tuesday of every month. There's room for just 60 people in the house at any one time, so you'll need to arrive early if you want to be in with the chance of being one of the lucky few who get in.
Historic venue
Established as a museum of antiquities and works of art following the architect Sir John Soane's death in 1837, No. 13 Lincoln's Inn Fields displays everything from 14th century stained glass to around 7,000 books. Other exhibits of interest include the Hogarth paintings, neo-classical sculptures, the sarcophagus of Seti I and other priceless Egyptian artefacts. Arts and history fans will no doubt relish the chance to see these and other unique treasures at the Sir John Soanes Museum by candlelight at the next late night monthly event.
First come, first served
As the late night openings of Sir John Soanes Museum by candlelight are so popular, the museum operates a first come, first served policy for the first 60 people in the queue. From then on, the venue has a one in, one out system for anyone left waiting in the queue. The average visiting time is around an hour.
