Sit Down at Museum of Childhood is an exhibition that looks at the history of seating for kids. With historical examples set alongside new and innovative design, the Sit Down exhibition allows you to explore the world of seating design through the fun fairytale theme of Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
Sit Down
Museum of Childhood is celebrating the humble chair for 2010 as the venue invites you to pull up a chair, and have a sit down. But only if you are under 12. Seating for kids has long had a different design ethic to adult seating, and here you and your nippers can try out a multitude of styles, and even register your vote for your favourite.
Who's been sitting in my chair?
Following the theme of Goldilocks and the Three Bears visitors to Sit Down at Museum of Childhood are invited to investigate the different seating solutions created in the 20th and 21st century in a Three Bears style cottage. Take a seat at the interactive dinner table, and consider the fundamentals of seating before taking a vote with your porridge spoon.
What is it for?
Seating isn't just about lowering one's bottom and elevating one's feet from the ground, it has more than just a primary function. Sit Down looks at how the seat has been adapted for wellbeing, learning, play, resting and transport and invites children to consider the impact of design on each of these factors. Looking back at the history of children's seating, visitors are also able to check out the influences on seating over the years, with objects such as highchairs, potties, benches, sofas, beanbags, rideon toys and play equipment on display.
Doing it for the kids
As our understanding of childhood has changed over the years so too has the equipment that we use to accomodate children. Accompanying the exhibition Sit Down at Museum of Childhood, you will also be able to look at other children's furniture over the years to provide a better context for understanding the development of the chair. In a move to continue the practical element of redesigning seaiting for kids, students from New Bucks University's Furniture Design and Technology course will be looking at ways in which to reinvent and revitalise the school chair.
Sit Down at Museum of Childhood takes place from 10am - 5.45pm, Saturday 6th February - Sunday 5th September 2010. Entry to the Museum and the exhibition is free.
