A Skin exhibition at Wellcome Collection looks at the largest organ in the body, exactly what it does to keep us healthy and how we choose to treat it. Examining the body with reference to medicine, health, decoration and age, this is your chance to get under the skin of Skin.

Skin exhibition at Wellcome Collection
From tanning to tattooing, our Skin is subjected to all kinds of daily rigours, yet it has an almost miraculous ability to heal itself. Here you can explore the full history of skin and what science holds in store for the future. From a mumified Peruvian man and artwork by Damien Hirst to cultural and social skin histories, the story of the body is told in full.

Under your skin
Much like a map for your body and personality, your skin tells others plenty about yourself, through its colour, scars, spots, moles, wrinkles, tattoos and decoration. Crucial for the sense of touch, the skin exhibition at Wellcome Collection looks at the cultural, religious and social significance of your skin and how it is treated.

The science part
Much of the Skin exhibition at Wellcome Collection looks at the role that our skin plays in helping to protect our bodies from a historical point of view. Looking back at the 16th and 17th centuries, when skin was simply thought of as something to keep your internal organs inside, the exhibition moves foward to the 19th and 20th centuries, where skin took on a more significant role in the medical world, with plastic surgery and skin transplants becoming widely available.

Skin Lab
Accompanying the Skin exhibition at Wellcome Collection is a the Skin Lab where artists feature their responses to developments in plastic surgery, scar treatments, and synthetic skin technology. These artworks complement examples in the show from the likes of Damien Hirst, Helen Chadwick and Wim Delvoye, which include paintings, anatomical models, sculpture, photos and film. The Skin Lab will also give visitors the chance to try our interactive experiences with skin flap models, try on latex skin suits or study biological jewellery.

The Skin exhibition at Wellcome Collection takes place from 10am - 6pm, Thursday 10th June - Sunday 26th September 2010. Entrance is free. The Wellcome Collection is closed on Mondays.
