Art is all about getting involved this year, but if the dizzying heights of Antony Gormley's plinth are too much, lie back and relax on the Skystation at Hayward Gallery. This space-like bubble seat has been created by artist Peter Newman with the sole aim of encouraging people to take time out, lie back and contemplate the sky above.

Sun Trap
When the sun's beating down this shiny disc attracts plenty of attention. Yes, it's a sculpture, but it's scuplture you're invited to lie down and stretch out on. Whether you're a tourist taking a break from sightseeing, an office worker on a break, or clubbers who are watching the dawn after a night out, you're all invited to put your feet up on the Skystation at Hayward Gallery.

Shiny Chaise Longue
The Skystation at Hayward Gallery is based on Le Corbusier's LC4 chaise longue. As public seating goes, it's a break from the normal bum-numbing wooden benches and is more like a sun lounger. Its smooth contours are moulded so that lying down in the sun is the most comfortable way to take a rest on the Skystation. Let's just hope the summer plays ball.

Prototype
The Skystation installation has been launched by Futurecity, a cultural consultancy that focuses on architecture and urban spaces. While the Skystation at Hayward Gallery is only a prototype for now, it's hoped there will be 100 more of the seats set up across London and the rest of the UK. The idea is that it will become a shared piece of public art across the whole country, linked together by a collaborative website. As well as the Skystation, Peter Newman is hosting a series of his photographs in Concrete, the Hayward Gallery's cafe.

The Skystation at Hayward Gallery is in place and is free for the public to use from 8th July - 14th September 2009.
