Our fair Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has unveiled a slavery memorial statue at City Hall to mark International Slavery Day on 23rd August. The slavery memorial statue is a maquette, or a scale model, with the full version to hopefully be erected permanently in Hyde Park later in the year.

The slavery memorial statue at City Hall will be on show from 18th August until 1st December, offering Londoners an always pertinent reminder of a history that can be all too easily forgotten. The slavery memorial statue commemorates the millions of African slaves whose lives were deeply affected, or lost by the slave trade.

The maquette will be exhibited by the charitable company, Memorial 2007. Set up in 2005 to act as a permanent memorial to the horrors of slavery, and taking part of their name from the 100 year anniversary of the abolition of the trade. The full memorial statue will be over 7ft high, and if it should be approved, will take pride of place in Hyde Park.

The maquette of the slavery memorial statue will be on show at Lower Ground Floor, City Hall from 18th August – 1st December 2008.
