The South Africa Landscape at British Museum takes pride of place on the museum's forecourt throughout the warmer months as the area is taken over by flora from the Cape. Hosted in conjunction with Kew Gardens, this is your chance to experience the exotic nature of plantlife from one of the most biodiverse areas of the world.

South Africa Landscape at British Museum
Open until early October 2010 this unique plant exhibition is attempting to encourage visitors to the museum to explore the flora on display outside before they come into the British Museum to investigate the country's history. Connecting between the cultural landscape and the natural one, this outdoor exhibition brings the heart of South Africa into London for a long, hot summer.

Kew Gardens
You may not instantly think of the British Museum when it comes to lush and verdant landscapes in London, as Kew Gardens are the big names in town. So for the exhibition of the South Africa Landscape at British Museum, Kew have kindly sourced and installed the plants and trees to recreate an area of the Cape, full of stunning exhibits not normally seen outside their native country.

South Africa in bloom
Gardening fans and those who love to travel will be thrilled to see the South Africa Landscape at British Museum during its stay, as the outdoors exhibition includes some amazing specimens of plantlife. From the African lily and the bright blue Kingfisher daisy to red hot poker flowers and vivid pink fig marigolds, there are plenty of beautiful exhibits included. Visitors will also be entranced by the unusual and rare quiver tree which has a distinctively thick trunk and short, stubby upward-growing branches.

On display
Although the South Africa Landscape at British Museum is located outside the museum building, there is still plenty of chance to be inspired by history. The landscape exhibition is set in a desert-like location, with sand and rocks strewn on the paths, and in amongst the colourful flowers, visitors can can reproductions of famous rock art as part of the show. Depicting men and animals copied from specific paintings in South Africa, these illustrations add to the feel of being in a completely different country, and will no doubt inspire many people to seek out any South African collections housed within the museum.

The South Africa Landscape at British Museum takes place from 10am - 6pm, Thursday 29th April - Sunday 10th October 2010. Entrance to the landscape exhibition is free.
