The Southbank Christmas lights will bring colour and sparkle to the Royal Festival Hall and other important Southbank buildings this Christmas as the designer lights illuminate the area along the Thames.

As the lights designed by artist David Batchelor illuminated the Southbank Centre in 2006, in 2007 the lights were designed by artist Anya Gallaccio who is famed for creating site specific installations, using organic materials.

Renowned British artist David Batchelor’s work also returned to the site for 2007, meaning that visitors got twice the illumination for the Christmas period. Taking inspiration from 2006's restoration work on the Royal Festival Hall, the Southbank Christmas lights used brilliant colour and light to create an amazing alternative display.

Along the west side of the Royal Festival Hall the coloured lights were applied to various objects, transforming pallets, bins and cement mixers from mundane building tools into extraordinary glowing forms. These most unusual Christmas lights at Southbank were a great attraction to many Londoners, young and old, and attracted even more tourists to the area to see the fantastic illuminations.

Areas at the front of the Royal Festival Hall were illuminated with festoons of low energy lights set inside recycled plastic supermarket bottles and multi-coloured lines of containers hung between the shops and trees along the river. The Southbank Christmas lights are likely to be some of the most unique displays of festive light in the city again for 2008 and consequently are well worth a visit from anyone who likes their Christmas to be a little bit different.

The illuminations were turned on by model and author Sophie Dahl, on a night which coincided with a event of festive Christmas shopping across the site and special festive singing from the Southbank centre's Voicelab Choir. Giving you the chance to grab some mulled wine and get festive, the sparkling lights for along the South Bank will be back again for Christmas 2008.

Information on the Southbank Christmas lights for 2008 will be available shortly - click back soon to find out more.
