The Southbank Festival of Food brings you four days of the best food and produce, talks, demonstrations and live music all in celebration of good eating and responsible buying. With an ethical Slow Food Market and even a Bee Day, there is plenty to get your teeth into at the inaugual Southbank Festival of Food.
Bringing you delicious produce that has been ethically produced, environmentally grown or reared and sold at a fair trade price to the consumer, the Slow Food Market is the place to stock up on a wonderful range of edible goodies. A major star at the Southbank Festival of Food, the market gives you the chance to try and buy rare breed meats, raw milk cheeses, exotic spices, chutneys and biodynamic wines.
A range of demonstrations accompany the market meaning you can hear straight from the butchers and farmers how their food is produced and give you advice on buying in the future. Sarah Moore, who ran the kitchen at Air Studios for 12 years will be on hand to show you how to cook tasty dishes for under a fiver, while Arthur Potts Dawson, co-owner of Acorn House will demonstrate how to enjoy some delicious autumnal ingredients.
There will also be the chance to talk to a sushi chefs from Feng Sushi as they use sustainable fish sources to make delicate dishes, while Cyrus Todiwala from Cafe Spice Namaste and Jacky Lelievre from The Butcher's Hook demonstrate how to select produce and create simple seasonal dishes.
On Saturday 20th September a very special event will take over the Southbank Festival of Food as the day is Slow Food Bee Day. With the gradual decline in wild honey bees since the 1990s, we are now starting to feel the environmental impacts of their decreasing population, so bee day allows you to see how to help honey bees in your area and speak to the beekeeper at Chelsea Physic Garden to allow you to learn more about these fascinating and vital creatures.
Kids can get involved throughout the festival too, as busy bee activities take place in the Busy Bee tent, with art and food events for all ages. Live music will keep adults entertained as they enjoy all the festival food and fun too, with performances from the Shellac Sisters, Bellowhead, Flavours in Emotions and the Brighton Morris Men all taking over the Festival Terrace from Thursday onwards.
Various talks are taking place throughout the Southbank Festival of Food in the festival demo tent to give you a better idea of how your food is produced and where it comes from. Fans of Hugh Fearnly Whittingstall will be keen to attend the Planet Chicken talk on Thursday 18th September, whereas those with a passion for Italian will want to hear Delizia! on Friday 19th September.
