Do the sounds of Sweet Home Alabama and These Boots Are Made For Walking get you up on the table yee hawing and line dancing in your worn cowboy boots? Then Southbound at The Phoenix, a monthly night showcasing tunes from the American South, is sure to get your toes tapping.

A taste of the Deep South
Southbound at The Phoenix is an amalgamation of two previously successful nights – the monthly Sin City (a country and western cowboy-inspired event) and Heavy Load (a heavy rock club night showcasing tunes from the late ‘60s and early ‘70s). This monthly event, which began life at The Albany but has since moved to its regular monthly spot at The Phoenix, celebrates music from the American South, primarily ‘70s southern rock and outlaw country. DJ Beardy Rob plays the tunes and makes sure the country sounds keep flowing.

The Phoenix born from the flames
Tucked away behind Cavendish Square, a stroll too far from TopShop for many tourists and shoppers, sits this typical boozer. The exterior shows little to belie what’s secreted inside. Upstairs, draught beer, traditional wooden furnishings and a simple decor bring in regular drinkers. However, downstairs, with toilet doors covered in comic book artwork and a sprawling dance floor brings an unusual selection of club nights to those bored of the usual funky house and RnB filled cheesy venues that pepper central London. Instead, expect nights like Southbound at The Phoenix.

Who will I be yee hawing beside?
Southbound at The Phoenix pulls in a crowd of people who love music from the Deep South. You won’t spy any pink fluffy cowboy hats and hen parties, this is the real deal. Hippy chic, genuine bushy beards and proper line dancing guys and gals head along to enjoy a selection of non-commercial tunes with heart. Do keep an ear out for Lynyrd Skynyrd though.

Southbound at The Phoenix takes place from 9pm - 3am on the second Saturday of every month. Entry is £3.00 before 10pm, £5.00 after.
