The Spitalfields Festival returns to London this summer in a diverse showcase of classical and contemporary music. Live music fans can enjoy a slice of culture in Shoreditch and Spitalfields at a perennially popular festival.

Classical sounds at the Spitalfields Festival
A string of classical performances are taking place at the Spitalfields Festival, presenting a line up of exclusive live acts in East London. Highlights from this year’s programme includes a dramatic performance of Handel's Aci Galatea e Polifemo at Christ Church Spitalfields, the world premiere of the We Are Shadows opera project at Shoreditch Church, and the London debut of Swedish recorder virtuosa Dan Laurin with Arte dei Suonatori.

Three decades of classical music
Now in its 35th year, the Spitalfields Festival has become established as one of the biggest events on the classical music calendar. Fans can expect world class renditions of classic pieces in a vibrant festival atmosphere, held at venues throughout Shoreditch and Spitalfields.

New music
In addition to classical music a selection of contemporary pieces will also feature throughout the festival. Highlights include a night of electronic music and visuals hosted by DJ and broadcaster Nick Luscombe, as well as a performance by The Tippett Quartet at Village Underground. Choral music also features heavily in the 2011 programme, with choirs including the London Bulgarian Choir and The Joyful Company of Singers on the bill.

Lunchtime concerts
Also taking place during the festival is a series of free lunchtime concerts at Old Spitalfields Market. From classical and orchestral music to choirs and quirky musical games, there should be plenty of melodic lunchtime morsels to gobble up during your lunchbreak.
