The Mall
The Sainsbury’s Sport Relief London Mile is an energetic charity event taking place in central London this spring. Runners are invited to complete a one, three or six mile course in support of Sport Relief 2012 and all the charities it supports. Dress up, lace up and get down to The Mall for some active fundraising in the spring sunshine. On your marks…
Get active for charity
Anyone can take part in the Sport Relief Mile, which is part of a national series of events. The last Sport Relief London Mile year saw over 80,000 runners take to the streets for the cause, including families, workplace teams and individual fundraisers. The event promises to be just as lively this year with thousands of fun runners hitting the pavement for a mile of high energy fundraising.
A day out in London
If you’re thinking the event sounds a bit too much like hard work, rest assured; participants can run, walk, jog or stroll the mile as they see fit. All manner of costumes and outfits will also be on display in the charity run at what is guaranteed to be a vibrant day of fundraising in London. The route includes the Horse Guards Parade, the Queen Victoria Memorial and Buckingham Palace, perfect for a bit of sightseeing whilst you go.
Bump shoulders with the stars
Previous Sports Relief runners have included a string of sports stars and celebrities, including the Olympic gold medalist Kelly Holmes and rugby player Jason Leonard. WAG Alex Best, Strictly Come Dancing star Anton du Beke and darts champion Andy Fordham have also donned their trainers for the day, as well as the likes of Christine Bleakley and Lawrence Dallaglio. Participants in the Sport Relief London Mile can expect to see more than a few famous faces on the day. Who knows, you might even beat a sports star to the finish line.
Famous feats
There's no doubt that many people taking part in this year's event will have been inspired by high profile feats of endeavour such as the jaw dropping 43 marathons in 51 days completed by Eddie Izzard, all in aid of Sport Relief. Earlier this year, David Walliams made the headlines and raised over £1 million by swimming a 140 mile stretch of the Thames. If you feel like giving Eddie and David a run for their money and beating your own personal best both in running time and sponsorship fees, then sign up and show everyone just what you're capable of.
Sport Relief 2012
Proceeds from the event will go towards helping disadvantaged young people and families in the UK as well as victims of poverty, abuse and exploitation worldwide. The run is expected to raise tens of thousands for these causes, with organisers hoping to beat last year’s total. As well as the mile long run there are a number of other special events happening across London for Sports Relief, from swimming challenges to world record attempts.
The Sport Relief London Mile takes place on Sunday 25th March 2012, starting at The Mall.
