Filling the whole of the piazza with a spring like buzz, Spring Renaissace at Covent Garden is transforming the square into the ultimate destination for plants, flowers, fresh fruit and vegetables.
Running until the 18th May, the Spring Renaissance at Covent Garden will see a whole host of exciting spring themed events take place in and around the piazza. Celebrating the joys of spring, and bringing back some forgotten traditions of the past, you will be welcomed into the warmth of the spring months with several exciting performances and installations.
A modern incarnation of the flower market that dominated Covent Garden for 300 years will be a key part of the events calender, with a giant flower installation that evolves into an amazing piece of artwork over time. And the flower market, Flower Power will be open every weekend throughout the Spring Renaissance to provide you with dazzling bouquets of colour and fragrance. Hanging baskets also deck the piazza during the spring, transforming the normally grey square with a riot of colour.
Matt James, Channel 4's City Gardener, will be on hand to open up his Urban Gardening Boutique and to hand out advice to budding Alan Titchmarshes or for anyone who wants to know what kind of soil to grow marigolds in. There will also be a chance to get your own hands drity with the mini allotment, a working shed and a scarecrow installed to keep the pigeons away from the seedlings.
Once you have finished gardening for the day there will be a chance to get a bit of pampering with the Neom organics range. Their pop up shop will be doing its best to keep green fingers smooth and buffed, and getting you to try their indulgent organic and sweet smelling products.
Every weekend during the Spring Renaissance at Covent Garden, different workshops will show you different ways to get the most from your own garden or allotment. Learn how to make your own composter from David Bellamy, talk to Matt James about city gardens, see how to make your own garden furniture and even taste the fruits of the honey bees labours, with a special honey tasting session.
More demostrations, talks and live plant workshops are also set to take place, ensuring that everyone who visits the Spring Renaissance at Covent Garden comes away with green fingers. The events and installations, along with a complete working mini allotment where you can see the development of homegrown fruit and vegetables, make for a thoroughly spring like atmosphere in the piazza.
Spring Renaissance at Covent Garden runs from the 23rd April to 18th May 2008.
