St Georges Day at Trafalgar SquareTrafalgar Square will be host to the famous Borough Market on St Georges Day itself, with plenty of delicious food for all to try. Creating a true foodie lovers delight, the atmosphere will be one of a traditional English fete with street performances, live entertainment and a banqueting table. Wonderful food will be served throughout the day, and there will be plenty of cookery demonstrations to inspire you too.
Shakespeare’s Birthday PartyShakespeare shares his birthday with St Georges Day and the Globe at Bankside will be the location of a huge party celebrating the birthday of the Bard himself with special workshops, games and activities. Visitors also have a unique opportunity to get on stage at the Globe and deliver a line or two of Shakespearian verse. The birthday events take place on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th, and on St Georges Day, Wednesday 23rd April 2008 you can see a Tudor barge float down the Thames to dock at the Globe itself.
St Georges Parade at the CenotaphA short service and parade will be held at the Cenotaph at Whitehall, including the laying of a wreath and a formal march organised by the Royal Society of St George. The parade takes place on Saturday 19th April from 10:30am to 11:45am.
Festival for St George at Covent GardenLive music and dance will be performed by the English Folk Song and Dance Society, Moulton Morris and the Jive Aces, accompanied by traditional Punch and Judy plays. The crowds will be out in force on Saturday 19th April from 10:30am for what promises to be a lively St Georges Day London event.
Feast for St GeorgeToast England and good old St George with a fantastic menu at the National Dining Rooms. Part of a special series of menus dedicated to the patron saints, you can dine on some traditional English favourite at this prestigious venue from the 21st to 25th April 2008.
St Georges Day pub grubThe Prince Albert in Camden is also laying on some delicious fare for those in need of patriotic sustenance. Choose from English greats such as steak and kidney pudding and fish and chips for a very fine meal indeed.
Patriotic pie and pintHead to the Bridge Hotel on St Georges Day and you can indulge in a good old fashioned pie and pint for just £8.00 all day, and if you pop into the bar between 7pm and 9pm, you can bag yourself a pint of traditional English Young's bitter for £1.50.
Music at Royal Albert HallHead to the Royal Albert Hall for a patriotic evening of music as Robert Powell introduces Rule Britannia, Land of Hope and Glory and other English classic pieces. Rousing music coupled with stirring readings from John Betjeman and Shakespeare will make for a fantastic ending to the day.
St George at the National GalleryOne of the most famous images of St George fighting the dragon is on display in the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square. Many tourists and Londoners are keen to see the man in the armour doing his bit on St Georges Day, and if you want to see Paulo Ucello's version of St George and the Dragon, you can check out the painting in the gallery on 23rd April for free.
