Allotments have come along way since the days when they were associated with Arthur Fowler tending to his prize marrows. Nowadays, with the help of pretty outdoor spaces like St James’s Park Allotments, they’ve become part of the green and environmentally-conscious zeitgeist. For one, a lot of people want to grow their own organic vegetables, and secondly, it is an activity that all the family can get involved with to help save some money off the weekly shopping bill.

Locally sourced
If you’re the sort of foodie who calculates the amount of air miles that your dinner travels before making up your mind whether to buy it or not, the St James’s Park Allotments will allow you to get some tips about how to produce your own ingredients for the dinner table.

Access all areas
One of the things that might put you off getting your green fingers’ dirty is the fact that allotment spaces are in short supply. Whilst this is changing, thanks to schemes like the St James’s Park Allotments, there is still a long way to go in terms of making the pastime widely accessible. Listen to the experts at this event however, and you will hear a very different story, and even be shown how to grow your own food in the smallest and most confined spaces.

Home grown
By heading down to the St James’s Park Allotments, you can get some advice on how to use a patio, balcony or even a window sill to grow. Whilst many of you may already be familiar with growing tomatoes, herbs and even chillies in your back yard, you will also be shown how to cultivate potatoes, salads, and greens in small containers. The best thing is you can take that expertise home with you, and before long you could be feasting on a free dinner you have grown entirely with your own hands.

The St James’s Park Allotments are open daily from 10am-5pm until the end of 31st October 2009.
