Graffiti fans will be keen to Street Art at Tate Modern over summer 2008 as the iconic building is transformed into an urban gallery. With work from six of the most influential street artists in the world sprayed onto the facade, there is bound to be plenty of interest in this unusual exhibition.
The first major display of street art in London, Street Art at Tate Modern is fantastic chance to see amazing art work from all over the world that represents the mood of the streets and the people who make them their canvas. Bringing together artists from Italy, New York, America, France, Brazil and Spain, this exhibition will provide a fascinating insight into the different kinds of street art all over the globe.
Although street art has been around since the seventies, it has only in recent years begun to be appreciated as a serious and worthy artform, rather than just unwanted graffiti or defacement of public buildings. With many Banksy works appearing all over London, and several councils actually maintaining them, certain street art now comes with the cache of cool, rather than being seen as something to be got rid of.
Street Art at Tate Modern explores the political nature of the artists works as well as looking at them for their own artistic value. Generally portraying vibrant and colouful urban art, rather than just graffiti style tagging, the exhibition showcases each artists work in a similar context to that which it may be found in in its respective country.
You may think of urban street art as simply being spray painted stencils on blank walls, but Street Art at Tate Modern reveals the wider mediums that are being used to create amazing images. Combining drawing, photography, the use of deteriorating fly posters and billboards, along with traditional print and painting methods, the exhibition highlights the creativity and diversity of contemporary street art.
Showing, unusually, on the outside of the gallery, Street Art at Tate Modern opens on the May Bank Holiday weekend, Friday 23rd May 2008, and runs until the August Bank Holiday, Monday 25th August 2008, and is free to see.
