There’s plenty to keep young Londoners busy during the summer holidays, with a wide selection of summer holiday London events and activities taking place throughout the city for the summer of 2009. See below for a pick of the best places to visit for an active summer break. Beats watching television all day…
Somerset HouseLast year, a series of workshops took place throughout the summer of 2008 at Somerset House, inviting kids to get creative in a fun, lively atmosphere. There was an exciting family programme available, including free Saturday workshops for 6-12 year olds and free holiday drop ins. Science MuseumAll manner of science related mayhem will be kicking off at the Science Museum this summer, with a line up of workshops and special events in store for mad scientists in the making. Asides from the exciting exhibitions such as the Wallace and Gromit inventions show, events and workshops are taking place on certain days over the summer holidays. Science Muesum workshops are free, but spaces are limited.
Kids Week TheatreBudding thespians and general attention seekers can get their fill of theatre during Kids Week, a huge theatre event in August. Discount theatre shows, acting workshops, performance classes and more are on the line up for a week of top theatre fun in Central London. Kids Week 2009 takes place from Friday 14th August – Friday 29th August 2009.
Museum of ChildhoodAlong with the fascinating Make Do and Mend exhibition and the display of the work of Roald Dahl and Quentin Blake, there is always plenty of fun for kids at the V&A Museum of Childood. Events and activities that take their inspiration from the exhibitions, special themed days, craft sessions and story telling are just some of the things you can expect to entertain your little nippers over the summer holidays in London.
National GalleryWith free entry into one of the most famous of all London's art galleries, and many free events for kids too, this is a great place to take your art loving children over the summer holiday. Painting and drawing sessions, arts and crafts events, and the chance to hear the fascinating stories behind some of the collection can all be expected over throughout summer 2009.
Butterfly JungleTake your kids to meet some living, breathing creepy crawlies at the Natural History Museum, where an interactive Butterfly Jungle will be up and running throughout the summer holidays. Children can also explore the rainforest trail and exhibition, which feature plenty of brain puzzles and physical challenges to have them sleeping soundly after an energetic day.
London ZooIf the weather is fine, then take your little ones outdoors for the day and get them out in the fresh air. Meet the penguins, pet rabbits, see the Gorilla Kingdom and experience the thrills of the birds of prey - there is so much to see and do at London Zoo, that one day may not be enough. Kids activities and special events take place throughout the summer, and there is also the chance to get involved with a wide range of animals.
David Beckham AcademyLast year, kids who love sport could spend time at the David Beckham Academy over the summer with a variety of courses allowing children to improve their footballing skills and learn more about training and keeping fit. Ripleys Believe It or Not MuseumIf your child continually freaks you out with unusual and bizarre facts, then Ripleys Museum is the place to take them. Open thoughout the summer, the museum contains some of the most unusual artefacts on earth.
Walking With DinosaursEnjoy the spectacle of life size walking and roaring dinosaurs at the O2 Arena and Wembley Stadium in August, at the Walking With Dinosaurs live event. Kids and adults alike are bound to find something to enjoy at the show, which features 15 dinosaurs including a terrifying T-Rex.
Buckingham PalaceChildren who love history and the Queen will love the idea of visiting Buckingham Palace. Open over summer 2009, the rooms are set up for a state banquet with decadent silverware and sumptuous table decorations on display.
The London school summer holidays generally start on the week beginning Monday 20th July 2009, and the kids go back to school on Thursday 3rd September 2009.
