Swinging Carnaby Street
Carnaby Street was one of London’s best recognised areas of bohemian life in the Sixties, and the Swinging Carnaby event will be a testament to the enduring legacy the street left after one of the most liberating times in history. Consequently you can expect Carnaby Street to be swinging to the sounds of everybody’s favourite Sixties songs as the whole street gets flowers in its hair and gives peace a chance for a weekend of revelry dedicated to the swinging sixties.
Sixties celebration
As part of the swinging Sixties event on Carnaby Street, there’ll be a huge range of activities and events taking place to get everyone feeling those positive vibes. There’ll be psychedelic body painting and complimentary eye makeup makeovers from those lovely people at MAC, as well customised shoes from Vans and 60s Americana snacks and drinks from Hilfiger Denim, making sure that everything feels just like it did in the sixties.
Sixties music
The Sixties celebrations on Carnaby Street will also feature some great live music, with bands playing all the best-loved songs from the Sixties throughout the weekend on the Carnaby Street stage. There’ll also be open mic and jamming sessions at Ain’t Nothing But The Blues Bar as well as DJs playing more swinging Sixties songs in Ben Sherman, Sherry’s, The Face, Merc and Stromboli’s Circus. So get your dancing feet at the ready.
And much more
Visitors to the Sixties celebrations on Carnaby Street will also be able to enjoy some great exhibitions, with celebrated 60s photographer Philip Townsend showcasing a collection of images from the decade, titled Sorry You Missed The 60s. Art Vinyl in Kingly Court will exhibit iconic album cover artwork from some of the biggest acts of the decade, whilst the London College of Fashion will bring an exhibit celebrating 60s photography, hair, makeup and styling. Throw in some great food and drink and Carnaby Street’s celebration of the swinging Sixties is a must.
The Swinging Carnaby event takes place on Carnaby Street from Saturday 13th – Sunday 14th June 2009. The event is free to attend.
