Celebrate the Tate Modern 10th birthday this May as the iconic building and gallery reaches its first decade as the biggest modern art gallery in London. Along with the London Eye which celebrated its 10th birthday in March, the Tate Modern also hits the big one-oh this year. As the building was regenerated from a power station into an iconic and ground breaking art gallery, the Tate Modern has been at the forefront of arts events in London ever since. Part of the rejuvenation of the Southwark area and the featuring a critically acclaimed exhibition programme, the Tate Modern has a reputation for being at the heart of modern art in London.

As the gallery has been free for 10 years, and continues to offer a variety of exciting and unusual free events, you can rest assured that the events surrounding the Tate Modern 10th birthday are all free too. With events taking place on Wednesday 12th May to mark the actual birthday, and a festival the following weekend too, visitors to the Tate Modern will be spoilt for choice as to how to celebrate.

I am ten
Most ten year olds celebrate their birthdays in a sugary haze of chocolate cake, jelly and ice cream, however the Tate Modern 10th birthday is set to be a bit more sophisticated, although other ten year olds will be invited. On the day itself, a parade of 150 local kids will march from Southwark Cathedral and Borough Market to the gallery, with a band and cake inspired by the iconic power station towers. Visitors to the Tate Modern on the morning of Wednesday 12th May will be able to enjoy a slice of cake around the time of the parade and can even sing Happy Birthday, if they wish. But hurry, even a cake as large at the Tate gallery itself isn't bound to last long!

No Soul for Sale
Over the following weekend a free arts festival takes place as part of the celebrations for the Tate Modern 10th birthday, entitled No Soul for Sale. The festival is a three day mix of cutting edge arts events, performances, music and film, with plenty of opportunity for you to get involved with the festivities. Taking place in the famous Turbine Hall you can enjoy the creative spirit of the weekend as artist collectives and underground groups such as e-flux, no.w.here, the Royal Standard and Latitudes.

The Tate Modern 10th birthday celebrations take place from Wednesday 12th May - Sunday 16th May 2010. Entrance is free.
