The Tate Modern birthday procession kicks off the celebrations of the world famous art gallery as they mark their tenth birthday in style. With a free art festival, live music and dance performances and a giant cake in the shape of the gallery itself, this is sure to be one extravagent birthday party.

With 150 local school children wending their way through the streets of London and along the South Bank to reach the gallery, the Tate Modern birthday procession is set to be an exciting start to their free birthday events.

Ten years old
Led by the London School of Samba, the pararde kicks off at 10.45am from Southwark Cathedral with the cathedral bells ringing ten times to mark the special day. The Tate Modern birthday procession then travels down to the gallery with the children carrying Tate Modern 10 flags and specially designed Konditor and Cook gingerbread men, which symbolise local, national and international visitors to the gallery.

Birthday party events
Once the children that make up the Tate Modern birthday procession arrive at the gallery, they will be invited to take part in a special cake cutting ceremony, with a giant cake in the shape of the power station building. Joining them will Nicholas Serota, the Tate director, and several high profile artists and friends of the gallery, who will no doubt enjoy tucking into the specially made cake. Visitors will also be invited to have a slice of birthday cake, so head to the Tate Modern around 11.15am to see the procession arrive and see if you can bag yourself a piece of the gallery in edible form.

The Tate Modern birthday procession leaves from Southwark Cathedral at 10.45am and will arrive at the gallery at around 11.15am on Wednesday 12th May 2010. Entrance to the Tate Modern is free.
