Part of the Moctezuma: Aztec Ruler show at the British Museum, the Teocalli of Sacred Warfare London exhibition displays the massive stone monument regarded as sacred by the Aztecs.

Aztec altar
Demonstrating the close relationship between religion and warfare in Aztec society, the Teocalli of Sacred Warfare London exhibition is an intricately carved stone altar. Casting light on Aztec society before the arrival of Cortes and the Spanish Conquest of Mexico, the altar is one of the highlights of the Moctezuma exhibition at the British Museum.

Warrior society
As well as the Teocalli of Sacred Warfare London exhibition, the Aztec show at the British Museum also features many other valuable treasures. Ceremonial weapons and a model of the Great Temple where Moctezuma would have performed ritual blood letting and ordered the sacrifice of captives are also included in the display.

Tragic emperor
Known as the last elected emperor of the Aztecs, Moctezuma is seen in a tragic light in the Western world today as the leader whose demise at the hands of the Spanish colonialists lead to the downfall of the Aztec empire. The Teocalli of Sacred Warfare London exhibition is one of several visually stunning relics on show from the lost world of the Aztecs, bound to be popular with kids and adults alike.

The Teocalli of Sacred Warfare London exhibition is part of the Moctezuma: Aztec Ruler show, which runs from Thursday 24th September 2009 - Sunday 24th January 2010. Gallery opening times are 10am - 5.30pm, with late night opening until 8.30pm on Thursdays and Fridays.

Standard adult tickets for the exhibition cost £12.00; teenagers aged 16 - 18, students and concessions cost £10.00. Children under 16 go free. For more information and to book tickets in advance, call 0207 323 8181.
