A brand new event is set to transform the Thames into a sight from yesteryear. A majestic parade of vintage barges, oyster smacks and classic yachts will sail up the Thames at dusk, decorated in colourful bunting and manned by crew in traditional dress. This is the first time this graceful display will be part of the annual Thames festival and the Thames Classic Rally is sure to be an eye-catching addition to the 2009 event.
Vintage Views
More than 40 classic boats, Thames barges, Oxford and Cambridge boats will be moored in St Katherine Dock before setting off on the rally.
But for landlubbers there's plenty to keep you entertained on the docks. Sip champagne and try an oyster from one of the many food and drink stalls set up along the quayside. There'll also be deck games, rope making and other nautical activities. Or you can simply wander along the quayside and admire these specatucalr boats which will be decorated in twinkling lights. One of the highlights of the Thames Classic Rally will be the Twilight River Parade at sunset on Saturday. With vintage sails hoisted, these majestic boats will parade under an open Tower Bright into the upper pool.
Living Museum
The rally is part of the Thames Festival and, as such, it has plenty of attractions to compete with. The Mayor's Thames Festival is jam-packed with events for all ages, from parades to children's workshops. However, the Thames Classic Rally gives you the chance to experience the sailing craft of yesteryear. St Katharines Dock will be transformed into a sort of living museum. All participants in the rally will be dressed in classic sailing costumes, recreating the elegance of past eras. visitors can see the how these vintage boats are operated as some crew will be inviting the public on board for a closer inspection, although this is at their discretion.
Golden Age
This is the first Thames Classic Rally, however, it's sure to become an integral part of the Mayor's Thames Festival. Thames Barge trips are run throughout the festival weekend already, but this will be the first time a full flotilla of vintage craft of all styles - from oyster smacks and yawls to yachts and Thames barges - will be displayed together. Boat owners who want to take part in the rally must book early as spaces are limited to just 40 boats. For those who do take part, you'll have exclusive access to a floating pontoon bobbing about between the boats which will host champagne receptions and parties. You'll also be invited to the official Thames Festival party which is hosted in a secret location and is based on the Golden Age of Transatlantic Liners.
The Thames Classic Rally takes place from 11th - 13th September 2009. Boats will be docked at St Katharines Dock from 5pm on Friday 11th September, and will leave at 6pm on Sunday, 13th September 2009. Saturday's River Parade takes place at 7.30pm to coincide with the sunset. For more information click on the link below.
