Take a tube ride through the Thames Tunnel and walk up to the Brunel Museum to see the Grand Hall during the Open House weekend. This is a rare chance to see first hand the combined engineering achievements of Marc and Isambard Kingdom Brunel, in the only project that the father and son team worked on together.

Underground journey
Take an underground journey beneath the Thames as part of the Thames Tunnel walk, the first tunnel known to have been successfully completed beneath the Thames and now incorporated into the London Underground, forming the points between Rotherhithe and Wapping stations. The tunnel was built between 1825 and 1843, and was Isambard Kingdom Brunel's first engineering project, which he worked on aged just 19.

Rare opportunity
Go on a short ride on the London Underground and pass through the 396 metre long tunnel, which lies 23 metres below the river's surface at high tide. After glimpsing the original brickwork and other features of the Thames Tunnel, walk back up to the Brunel Museum for a rare chance to descend into the Grand Hall, an area half the size of Shakespeare's Globe and an important part of London's industrial history.

The self guided Thames Tunnel walk and Grand Hall opening takes place from 10am - 5pm, Saturday 17th September - Sunday 18th September 2011. The walk starts at the Brunel Museum and finishes with a ride on the tube from Rotherhithe to Wapping.

Admission to the Grand Hall is free. Please note that queues are likely at this event.
