Tucked off Putney High Street with picturesque river views, The Boathouse is the place to go when the sun comes out to play. It’s still worth a visit on a gloomy London day, but be sure to nab one of the leather couches on the ground floor for comfort with a view.

The Venue
Away from the crowded High Street, The Boathouse holds prime position on the Putney riverside. On a sunny day you may have to make your way through the throng of people crowded around tables and jugs of Pimms, but once through the heavy double doors you’ll find yourself surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows, making the most of the location. Grab a seat downstairs if you can, otherwise choose from the dark but cosy mezzanine level or the upstairs dining room and balcony bar.

The Atmosphere
If you get in early and snap up a prime spot at The Boathouse, you’ll relax in no time as you sit back and take in the river view. But, if like most punters, you miss out on a table and end up jostling for floor space, you might find things a bit rowdier. If the weather is fine, take advantage and stroll outside to the beer terrace, which is crowded with a mix of young locals, families and tourists keen for quieter view of the Thames. Bar staff are chatty and friendly, offering prompt and professional service.

The Food
Expect typical pub food with a modern twist on a menu that offers a range of starters, dishes to share and more substantial main meals. At the downstairs bar or on the mezzanine level you can order perfect drinking accompaniments like nachos, chips, sandwiches and pies; while the top level bar offers more restaurant-type meals like steak, seafood, lamb chops and a delicious range of puddings. Prices are at the higher end for pub food but it is fresh, imaginative and served with a view.

The Drink
There’s a good selection of beers and ales available at The Boathouse – either bottled or on tap. The wine list is reasonable and offers tasty selections at both the lower and higher price range, and the staff are happy to recommend their favourite drop to the more fickle wine drinker. Prices are fairly standard but you do pay slightly more for the location.

The Last Word
If you feel like escaping the usual High Street hangouts head to the river for a touch of fresh air and alfresco ambience. With the choice of a more relaxed downstairs area and outdoor terrace or the more sophisticated upstairs bar and balcony, The Boathouse has all bases covered.
