On the banks of the Thames, on the Jubilee Walkway, Doggetts Coat and Badge offers an honest pint with a nice view of the City. How quintessentially London!
The Venue
Nestled under Blackfriar’s Bridge is this four-floored pub, right on the Thames. London’s Southbank is enjoying a growing popularity and Doggetts Coat and Badge is always a busy place, reaping the rewards of such a prime location. Inside is decorated with wooden panelling, wooden floorboards and chalkboards adorning the walls. There are also cash and quiz machines to while away your time. Outside the front of Doggetts, on the Thames side, are some picnic benches for those that don’t mind getting mowed down by enthusiastic joggers, tourists or both. However, at the back of the pub is a nice beer garden, which has plenty of seating and the pub even runs a BBQ in summer months. Upstairs, there is also a terrace bar - great for private parties and an evening post-work pint.
The Atmosphere
Doggetts Coat and Badge is friendly and noisy during lunchtimes and evenings, and is particularly popular with people pouring out of work in the surrounding area. The bar staff are polite, but it can take a while to get served and even longer for food to get delivered to your table. The bar is relaxed and informal, with no need to dress up for the occasion. It lacks any pretension and touts itself as being a classic London pub.
The Food
Standard pub fare is the order of the day here, with a large menu boasting sandwiches, soups, jackets and burgers plus larger main meals. The food is fairly expensive for the area and portions can be on the mean side, even with side orders.
The Drink
Drinks at Doggetts Coat and Badge include beer on draft, wines and spirits. The prices are fair for the area, but if you want something a little more wild or contemporary, you may have to look elsewhere.
The Last Word
Doggetts Coat and Badge is traditional and classic through and through. The main draw of this place is the venue, which is perfect for watching the sun set over the Thames and the City light up, after a tough day at work.
