Another pub in the Youngs pub chain, The Dukes Head mixes the old with the new in relaxed yet elegant surroundings. Perfect for long Sunday lunches or late nights out, this pub has gone from tired old local to welcoming riverside haven.

The Venue
Tucked off a street corner and set on the bank of the Thames, The Dukes Head looks like any other traditional riverside pub. That is until you walk through the door and take in the original fireplaces, polished wooden arches and ornate glasswork and realise you’ve stumbled upon something special. With a main bar filled with comfy leather seating and rich wood surroundings you’d easily be satisfied by taking your tipple and relaxing in here. But when you notice the high ceiling dining room with stunning river views and see people pouring out from the basement bar you realise there’s so much more to this pub. On summer days punters spill out on to the footpath and even further across the street, until it gets to the point passers by and paying customers mingle into one heaving throng that you can’t help but want to join.

The Atmosphere
There really is something for everyone at The Dukes Head. Whether it’s a family affair in the dining room, friendly get together in the main bar or a girls’ night out in the trendy basement bar, there is a warm and relaxed vibe that is often missing in refurbished venues. Expect to see a mix of tourists, families, large groups of young locals and even cyclists stopping for a revitalizing drink – all cheerfully enjoying themselves. The atmosphere is a warm and casual one, as you’d expect from a riverside pub, but there’s also a sophisticated and polished feel to whole place. The bar and dining staff are not only friendly and helpful but prompt and professional.

The Food
This isn’t just pub grub, it’s gourmet grub. Even the simplest of bar snacks like chips and cheese boards become delectable morsels when served from The Dukes Head kitchen. But you’d be mad not to sample some of the main meals the dining room offers including steaks, lamb racks and fish that give many local restaurants a run for their money. If you don’t have room for something substantial there are lighter options like open sandwiches, salads and delicious sharing boards. Add that to the decadent desserts and cream tea on offer and you’d be hard pressed not to find something to savour. Prices are very reasonable considering the high standard of the food and the plush surroundings.

The Drink
The wine list is extensive and well priced making the only problem choosing your tipple and the size of your serving. As you’d expect from a Youngs pub there is a good selection of lagers and ales bottled or on tap and seasonal beers like the honey flavoured Waggledance.

The Last Word
As far as riverside refurbishments go The Dukes Head is an utter success. It hits the mark on drinks, decor and dining, doing everything it attempts well. Perfect for everything from a quick pint and plate of chips to a candlelit champagne dinner, this great pub does not disappoint.
