The Vorticists exhibition London event takes place at Tate Britain in 2011 and seeks to celebrate the work of one of the only truly avant garde art movements in British history. Featuring pieces made between 1914-18 from the group led by painter Wyndham Lewis, The Vorticists, Manifesto for a Modern World explores the ways in which the artists moved away from the staid culture of Edwardian Britain and celebrated the advance of the modern.

The Vorticists exhibition
London plays host to over 100 key Vorticists works of art for this major exhibition, including paintings, sculpture, photography, journals and literary ephemera in its showcase. Bringing together works from several renowned artists of the time, visitors to Tate Britain will experience the vibrant force of the radical movement and examine the only two Vorticists exhibitions held during the life of the group.

Avant garde art
Closely linked to the American avant garde (it was American poet Ezra Pound who labelled the group The Vorticists) a major aspect of The Vorticists exhibition looks at the influence of French Cubism and Italian Futurism on the British art scene at the time, and the relationship between it and other modernist movements. Having emerged in Britain in 1914, art collector John Quinn and Ezra Pound were key to introducing the group to America and thereby securing their one and only New York exhibition in 1917.

Modern influences
Although The Vorticists were heavily influenced by the other modern art groups at the time, they also strove to define themselves as separate and distinct. Combining the elements of machine-age forms and the energy of a vortex, the group featured artists such as leader Wyndham Lewis, sculptors Henri Gaudier Brrezska and Jacob Epstein, and painters William Roberts, David Bomberg, and Edward Wadsworth. Visitors to The Vorticists exhibition London event will also note that the group were radical in their inclusion of several female members, namely Jessica Dismorr, Dorothy Shakespear and Helen Saunders.

Exhibition highlights
Various groundbreaking pieces of art are sure to grab the attention of all art lovers in London during the run of the show, including the likes of Hieratic Head of Ezra Pound by Henri Gaudier-Brzeska and Wyndham Lewis' Workshop C. Other featured highlights are Rock Drill by Jacob Epstein, The Mud Bath by David Bomberg and The Crowd by Wyndham Lewis.

The Vorticists exhibition London event takes place from Tuesday 14th June - Sunday 4th September 2010 at Tate Britain. Tickets for the exhibition are not yet on sale - click back soon for more information.
