A display entitled Titians First Materspiece at National Gallery goes on show over the spring and summer of 2012 to complement the Metamorphosis exhibition also
open to the public at the same time. Focusing on his very first great masterpiece, The Flight into Egypt, the National Gallery invites visitors to see the painting in the flesh after several years of restoration work.
Titians First Masterpiece at National Gallery
Renowned as being one of the greatest artists of his period, Tiziano Vecellio lived and worked in Venice from around 1490 to 1576, and became synonymous with bold brushwork and the application of colour in a dramatic way, both in landscape and portraiture. With the Flight into Egypt reckoned to be one of his earliest pieces, the exhibition of the newly restored work, depicting Mary, baby Jesus and Joseph fleeing from Herod, is bound to cause excitement for fans of his art and anyone with a passion for Italian Renaissance painting in general.
From Russia with love
The painting that forms the heart of Titians First Masterpiece at National Gallery is the depiction of The Flight into Egypt, which is an extraordinarily ambitious work for such a young artist as Titian would have been at the time. Having spent several years being carefully restored to its former glory, the painting has been loaned by the Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg, and will reside at the National Gallery in London until the beginning of September. This is the first time the painting has been seen outside of Russia since Catherine the Great bought it in 1768.
Venetian art
Various other artists are included in the display alongside Titian, giving vistors the chance to see other contemporary Venetian works from the same period. With pieces on loan from other collections and art from the National Gallery itself, the display aims to demonstrate how Titian was influenced by the artists of his day and to give you the opportunity to directly compare others in the exhibition Titians First Masterpiece at National Gallery with others.
Metamorphosis: Titian 2012
The Titian inspired exhibition entitled Metamorphosis also takes place at the National Gallery at the same time, meaning you can get more from the Renaissance master than just one painting. Included in the Metamorphosis exhibition are works by a variety of artists, choreographers, composers and poets, all of whom have taken inspiration from three key Titian pieces, which are also on show at the gallery.
