The Tour of Britain 2009 promises to be one of the biggest cycling events of the year, a multi stage UK cycle race culminating in London. Cycle fans will not want to miss the chance to see top competitors battle it out past landmark London locations in a thrilling race event.
Tour of Britain 2009
Returning for another year of top flight cycling action, the Tour of Britain is a seriously prestigious race event in which the country’s cycling elite go for it over eight days of gruelling riding. Several teams will be pedalling for glory across eight separate stages throughout the UK, starting with an exciting new route through London.
Cycling in London
London will be centre stage for the final stages of the Tour of Britain race, including a selection of famous landmarks. The streets of London will be transformed into a complete race taking place on Victoria Embankment, Whitehall and Tower Hill, with the cyclists racing past iconic London landmarks including Big Ben and the Tower of London.
Join the crowds
Crowds will be out in force to see the cyclists go for it throughout the streets of London in what is guaranteed to be an exciting session of live racing. Londoners are invited to get in gear and show some support, before seeing the winner crowned champion at the end of the overall event that has seen competitors battle it out in Tour of Britain races around the country.
A day out
Thousands of Londoners will be out to show some support for the cyclists and see who has what it takes to win the Tour of Britain 2009. The final stage starts at 2pm in Whitehall, and will see riders cycle east past Downing Street, along the Victoria Embankment, up Tower Hill and around the Tower of London before finally returning to Whitehall after their gruelling 10 laps around London. Spectators can watch the action from anywhere along the race route in a lively, charged atmosphere. The race is set to finish around 4pm after a 92km slog around the city.
Charity event
Want the chance to cycle round the track before the professionals start their race? Opening up the track to non professionals for the first time, the Prostate Cancer Charity bike ride takes place on the London circuit on the morning of Saturday 19th September. The London stage of the Tour of Britain 2009 starts 2pm, Saturday 19th September 2009, beginning and ending in Whitehall. The race is expected to end at 4pm back at the start line. The Tour of Britain 2009 race is free to watch.
