Toy Boats at National Maritime Museum
Featuring miniature ocean liners, toy paddle steamers, tin battleships and clockwork submarines, along with a whole range of other toy boats, the exhibition is perfect for anyone with a fascination for all things maritime.
Aye, aye, Cap'n
A range of different propulsion methods including clockwork to steam producing burners in the toy boats are on show in the exhibition of toy boats at National Maritime Museum. From the 1850s onwards, Britain and other nations became embroiled in a race to produce bigger and better ships, and consequently naval toys became all the rage. Following in their larger counterpart's footsteps, the boats were made bigger, better and faster than their predecessors as toymakers struggled to produce working models.
Water features
As the obsession with sailing and nauticalia increased, many town councils began to create new parks with ponds and fountains where children could sail their boats. These along with an increase in the seaside as a popular holiday destination encouraged boat makers to design finer and more sophisticated ships for adult collectors. Anyone who has ever spent hours putting together a kit model of a ship will be delighted to see some of the maritime specimens on show at this unusual exhibition of toy boats at National Maritime Museum.
Classic models
As well as encouraging children to learn about Britain's maritime heritage, the way that toy boats were marketed and packaged also tells an interesting tale. Visitors to the show of toy boats at National Maritime Museum are sure to be fascinated by the recreation of an Edwardian shop window featuring a selection of toy boats that would have enticed an young child or boating enthusiast.
The exhibition Toy Boats at National Maritime Museum takes place from 10am - 5pm, Saturday 1st May 2010 - Sunday 1st May 2011. Entrance is free.
