Causing as much controversy as if she had created the works herself, the gallery curated for the Summer Exhibition by Tracy Emin at Royal Academy is bound to be one of the most popular rooms of the whole show. Having gathererd together works that she says please her and reflect her own taste, you can see the selection by Tracey Emin at Royal Academy until the end of the summer exhibition on 17th August 2008.
The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition takes place every year and gives artists all over the UK the chance to submit their works for inclusion in this everyman show. Displaying famous and highly paid artists alongside amateurs and those with real talent but no representation, the show is famous for being one of the most inoffensive exhibitions to take place in London.
2008 however, is a different story. Out to shock and appall those who have come to expect oils of flowers and watercolours of cats, the gallery curated by Tracey Emin at Royal Academy even comes with its own warning sign, in the style of the announcement before films that contain swearing or scenes of a sexual nature. Unlike the statement that proclaims, some viewers may find the images disturbing, the sign up in Tracey Emin's gallery declares, the the images will shock. There is no maybe about it.
A painting of a woman having sex with a zebra, a photo of Damien Hirst as a young man pictured next to a severed head, a sculpture created out of penises and hands, a pile of (possibly)pubic hair,a collection of photos containing images of pregant women and hands covered with blood, and a video installation of a naked woman hula hooping with barbed wire are just a few of the images that are sure to cause offence to those unused to Emin's style of art. Certain to raise eyebrows and cause a fair amount of tutting with some viewers, the collection by Tracey Emin at Royal Academy will also no doubt be a lure for many others.
The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition has a reputation for being a little bland and on the safe side, so with the addition of work curated by Tracey Emin whose reputation for being on the more dangerous side of contemporary art no doubt puts some people off, the galleries could also see a younger more edgy crowd interested in the show for the first time. Acused of sexing up the exhibition, the inclusion of work from Tracey Emin's collection will certainly see ticket sales going up on previous years as students of art and fans of Emin flock to the gallery to see what all the fuss is about.
Alongside images displaying nudity and sexual scenes in fairly graphic detail, the selection of work for the Summer Exhibition by Tracey Emin at Royal Academy also features one of her own paintings, entitled Ruined, which is acrylic, oil pastel and pencil on canvas.
The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition is on show until the 19th August 2008, and includes one gallery that has been curated by Royal Academian Tracey Emin.
